There was a lot to learn in a very short amount of time. This solution required empathy to the highest degree.
The Goal
To learn more about individual’s experiences with their health conditions and to find out exactly how they log their diet, if they log their diet, and what their experiences with nutrition apps have been like in the past.
Process Overview
Business Research
An analysis of the business model and competitive analysis of direct and indirect competitors gave us a business framework to keep in mind.
User Testing
A screener survey with 58 responses yielded 10 interviews for my team where we were able to better understand user’s health experiences.
Synthesis
Culmination of user experiences was key to this project to ensure that I did not create just another food log app.
Ideation/Prototyping
Creating sketches and paved the way for organizing wireframes that would lead into the final solution.
Research Overview
Pan Point #1
Communication with Their Dietitian has been a significant hurdle.
Every individual interviewed that had either spoken to or continues to use a prescribed dietitian noted that getting in contact with them was not an easy or straightforward process.
Pan Point #2
there is not much assistance with the mental health side of people’s health goals.
The interviewees all struggled with the consistency required to maintain their diets, highlighting that their motivation fluctuates with what’s going on in their lives. They all felt a lack of support with the solutions they use.
Pan Point #3
people have trouble keeping consistent with logging their diets.
100% of the interviewees said they had difficulty logging their diets either when they first began, or currently struggle staying consistent. A third of the users preferred to write their diet like a journal, while the other third preferred to search and add their foods to a list layout. Only 10% of the users maintained a consistent daily log.
Synthesis
Every user we talked to had their own unique experience with their health dieting, so it was imperative that we identify trends.
An affinity mapping exercise quickly revealed to us that our solution needed to be robust, yet intuitive and it must encourage users to want to maintain their diets. Ease of use, connection with their dietitian, resources and gamification became the top priority moving into the next phase.
Ideation
Now that we knew where our research was pointing us, it was time to begin crafting a solution.
I first began sketching to focus on the key features of the website app to get a feel for the layout and compare ideas.
These are sketches of early ideas I had for the food log.
From there I then turned our sketches into wireframes to see how the ideas came to life on screen and to adjust sizing/spacing. I was able to incorporate new, much smaller features that we identified as useful for the user that I was unsure if we would have space for before such as a weight tracker.
Solution
With a key focus on our main pain points, I created a high fidelity prototype that communicated the solutions well and left ample room for creative business monetization ideas.
Nothing is as it seems
I wish I could say that this project went smoothly from start to finish, but unfortunately I cannot. I was the Project Lead for this website app where I was responsible for a Design Lead and Research Lead. Due to an unfortunate event, with only a few days before our final deadline, we were without a Design Lead and unable to use the existing prototype.
That meant that I was now not only the Project Lead and Research Assistant, but I also picked up the role of Design Lead. During a 4 day race to the finish line, I created 90% of the teams wireframes and was responsible for 100% of the high-fidelity prototype.
My Research Lead and I knew that we had a great solution awaiting us if we just listened to our research and worked tirelessly to deliver a solid solution.
So we did.
Disclaimer
This project was conducted through general Assembly as part of the uxdi immersive course I paid to enroll in. I had no contact with dupage dietitians and they are unaware that this solution has been created.
